The Devi Bhagavatam is a gigantic corpus of legends and poems concerning goddess worship. It is the largest single work of the prominent medieval poet Srila Jiva Goswami, who spent nearly his entire life in its composition. It is widely considered as one of our most sacred texts as well as an extraordinary literary masterpiece. On the day of Maha-shivaratri, while he was worshipping at his Radha-Kunda, he had a vision of his gurus, Sri Advaita Acharya and Sri Sanatana Goswami. They were very pleased with him for finishing this important task. Srila Jiva Goswami then fell unconscious for three days, after which he recovered. He then went to Vrindavan and showed the book to his gurus. They were both very satisfied with it. The book was originally written in Sanskrit. A number of manuscripts exist in this language. Its first known translations appeared in Bengali, Hindi, Gujarati, and Marathi. However, the most important commentary on the Devi Bhagavatam was written by Sri Jiva Goswami's disciple Srila Raghunatha dasa Goswami. This commentary is called "Laghu-bhagavatamrta" (or Laghu-bhagavat). The word "laghu" means "shorter" or "abridged". The book translates the entire text of the Devi-Bhagavatam into Sanskrit prose. It also has many appendicies, clarifications and additions to the original scripture.
